Understanding Commodity Prices And Price Fluctuations
Wire and cable pricing has been all over the place these past couple of years. Contractors have witnessed costs spike quickly and without notice, in a lot of instances destroying a significant piece of margin from projects. Knowing about and anticipating these price fluctuations will help you increase and protect your margins, plus it will give you an advantage over your competitors. The following article explains the causes of wire and cable cost movements and it explains concrete steps you can employ to leverage this volatility in your favor.
Reasons Why Prices Fluctuate
The cost of wire and cable and in particular power cable is extremely dependent on the cost of two main commodities: copper and oil. Most wire and cable is produced using copper rod, in addition to jacketing and insulation that also come from oil. As cable gets bigger in gauge size, it becomes more susceptible to large price fluctuations because of the large amount of raw product needed for production. For example, 1000 feet of a light gauge category 5 cable may require around 8 lbs of raw copper. On the other end of the scale, 1000 feet of heavy gauge 350 mcm mining cable may require 5000 lbs of raw copper. If copper costs float between $1.20 per pound and $4.50 per pound like they have in the past couple of years, a buyer may see an increase of ten to fifteen dollars in the category 5 order per each thousand feet. However, the cost on the 350 mcm may spike by over $5000 – with probable catastrophic effect on margins.
Commodities experts point to a couple of likely reasons for copper and oil price volatility. First is the growth of emerging countries like China and India. As these economies grow, they are needing more of these core commodities to spur their growth. This drives supplies down and causes price increases. Another reason commodity prices fluctuate may be the impact of commodity market speculation. Speculators often react to shortages by trying to buy more of a dwindling commodity. Again, as the traders buy more copper or oil, supplies drop and costs rise.
We witness the same thing driving commodities prices downward. In late 2008, when the worldwide economy slowed to a crawl, commodity supplies increased. As these supplies rose, costs fell. But, these price declines also caused another normal economic impact: miners and drillers cut back on production. In some cases, commodities producers were not able to produce these products at a profit, so they stopped investing in their people and equipment – thereby reducing supply and driving costs upwards again. These price variations are simply a product of supply and demand factors.

Excerpt: Drapier’s Letters is the collective name for a series of seven pamphlets written between 1724 and 1725 by the Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Jonathan Swift, to arouse public opinion in Ireland against the imposition of a privately minted copper coinage which Swift believed to be of inferior quality. William Wood was granted a letters patent to mint the coin, and Swift saw the licensing of the patent as corrupt. In response, Swift represented Ireland as constitutionally and financially independent in the Drapier’s Letters. Since the subject was politically sensitive, Swift wrote under the pseudonym M. B. Drapier to hide from retaliation. Although the letters were condemned by the Irish government, with prompting from the British government, they were still able to inspire popular sentiment against Wood and his patent.
