Government Grants Let Students Get Their Degree Through Online Degree Programs

These days, money is tight for just about everyone, especially college students. It seems that the cost of tuition and fees is increasing faster than the speed of light, and it’s impossible to catch up. Worry about financial issues can create stress for students that make it hard to focus on school.

Everyone has heard of students who have graduated with mountains of debt from student loans. That’s because often it may be the only way students can pay for college. Students who have utilized debt as the primary way to finance school may be faced with thousands of dollars in interest, in addition to their loan, immediately after they graduate.

Students who need financial assistance should apply for grant money to help pay for school. Grants might even be the best way to fund a college education, because the money never has to be repaid; it’s basically free money. Also, many grants can be used to help pay for additional expenses, like housing or transportation costs, because they are paid directly to the student.

Students can apply for a variety of different grants. There are government-funded grants, as well as privately funded grants available to students in nearly every major and discipline. Some grants are need-based, i.e., dependent on a student’s financial situation, while others are based on academics or some other criteria.

The Pell Grant is a government grant that is very well known. Students who are awarded the Pell Grant can receive up to $5,550 for the 2010 – 2011 school year, and it can be issued during the summer semester for the first time this year. Financial need is the consideration in awarding Pell Grants to qualifying students.

Another area of grant and scholarship money is available to students who perform well academically. Some schools even forgo tuition from students who have achieved extremely good GPAs and grades. Although these academic programs are very competitive, students who work hard may find that they are eligible for a variety of grants and scholarships from a number of areas, including educational foundations, alumni foundations, and departments and particular colleges who want to attract top students.

Many professional organizations offer grants to students who want to enter that particular field. Nursing grants are available from professional nursing organizations, as well as a great number of health care organizations and companies. The demand for nurses is not likely to lessen any time soon, especially with the aging population of baby boomers who are increasingly needing more and more healthcare. Aspiring teachers can also apply for grants that are available from educational professional organizations that need to fill their ranks with qualified candidates. Professions that are science, math, and technology driven also offer grant money in large amounts because of the shortage of people entering those in-demand professions.

No matter which profession a student wants to enter, there is likely some type of grants for college available to help pay for school. The great thing about grant money is that it’s free; you can increase your income by applying for and receiving aid while you attend traditional or online distance learning programs. Wouldn’t it be great to reduce your student debt load, or even eliminate it completely, with the help of grants?
