What Makes You Unique May Earn You The College Scholarships You Need For Your Degree Through Distance Education Degree Programs

The average college student views scholarships as their financial hero because most depend on financial aid to sustain their existence as a college student. Scholarships are monetary awards given to students for the purposes of continuing their education. Incoming college students have to meet specific requirements put forth by the scholarship’s sponsor in order to qualify and receive that particular scholarship.

Potential scholarships can be found at the click of a button and the list is literally unlimited. High school graduates only need to dedicate themselves to seeking out scholarships and they will probably find something that fits them perfectly. Scholarships can be awarded for a variety of reasons, but they all usually have similar characteristics.

A lot of one-time scholarships only require that a student meet a certain criteria and present the sponsor with an essay or writing sample of some sort, while long-term scholarships (those that can be renewed yearly) could require the aforementioned, plus require the student to maintain a minimum grade point average. All the information provided here is to give high school students the scope of possibilities that could be had with scholarships and by no means is the answer to all.

Scholarships are often broken up into what aspect of the student’s life they address; for instance, the student’s personal interests, their career aspirations, their culture and so on. Merit-based scholarships will focus on the student’s school-related interests and the activities at which they excel. Athletics, academics and extracurricular activities, such as volunteering, qualify as merit-based scholarships. Academic scholarships are one of the more popular forms of merit-based financial aid, which usually requires the student to have had a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Need-based scholarships are those that require a student to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to determine how much a student’s family can contribute to their education and how much is left wanting. Those who expect the family contribution to be little, if anything, are at a greater need for these types of scholarships.

Scholarships can be awarded based upon the applicant’s chosen career goals. Many sponsors are leagues or career associations that want to see their particular career field thrive and increase, so as an incentive, they provide scholarships to students interested in pursuing their particular career field. High-demand careers, such as nursing and teaching, are always willing to help the upcoming student who has the potential to excel in their field.

Student-specific scholarships are another popular type in which the applicant must first qualify based on specific cultural/genetic factors such as one’s ethnicity, religion, gender, heritage, and the like. One of the most visible examples of this is the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), which is an organization that specifically raises funds to provide African American students with an education.  Another example would be scholarships awarded specifically to individuals of Jewish descent.

Anything about you could be a potential scholarships qualifier. Whether you write poetry, or you come from a Hispanic background, literally anything could be your claim to financial aid, I can’t stress that enough. Added to all this is the wide and diverse field of grants for college. Both scholarships and grants can be applied to on-campus and course online programs, enlarging the benefits of going back to school to include everyone.
