What Does It Take to Become an Engineer?
You must be a resourceful and creative individual to get into the field of engineering. Engineers are great at solving problems and finding suitable workarounds.
In mechanical engineering, you might be either in the area of design, research or even manufacturing and sales. It is quite a diverse occupation. You would actually need a degree to become a mechanical engineer.
In 2008 alone, there were about 250,000 mechanical engineering professionals hired in the United States of America. Further reports show that over the next eight years, the industry is to experience an exponential growth in employment.
Getting into this field means that you will constantly need to be studying, before and during your career, it just never stops. Why is this? This is because technology is always evolving and it does so in a very fast rate. Engineers are expected to keep themselves up to speed with this. To be efficient in this occupation, one must have exceptional verbal skills and be good at communication. Other personal prerequisites include being proficient in math, physics, computers and also drafting.
Although the mechanical engineering wage starts at a pretty decent amount ($48,000 on average), it is possible for one to move beyond the $100k mark after a few years of experience in the field. After about five years of work experience, you would be able to learn about $80,000 per year on average (that is according to statistics).
Scholarships as well as loans are available for those of you who are interested in studying mechanical engineering but can’t afford it. The NSF as well as the federal government have recently opened up a new type of scholarship to help pay for those tuition fees. If you are not able to obtain a scholarship to study, there are always private organizations with which you can take out loans from.
The engineering industry was hit pretty badly by the recent economic turbulence. There is good news though, due to the government’s decision of going with green energy. This will be definitely opening up new doors for mechanical engineers. Because of this, engineering schools across the nation have seen a flood of new enrollments. Both traditional and online programs have been created to take on this huge and sudden increase in demand. There is no better time to become an engineer, than now.
As an engineer, you will always be able to find work despite the ups and downs of the economy. So don’t worry. If you have a passion, and the talent for this field, job prospects will always be in abundance.
