Costs Of College Reduced Through Education Scholarships And Distance Degree Programs
The University of California-Irvine, University of Southern California and University of Notre Dame are among the “Best Value” national universities in US News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges 2011.” That doesn’t mean these colleges post the lowest tuition rates. The Best Colleges edition, which came out in August 2010, lists these institutions because of what students actually pay after scholarships and other forms of financial aid are taken into account.
There’s a difference between the published tuition rate, or “sticker price,” for colleges, universities and technical schools and the “net” cost after scholarships, grants and other forms of financial aid are considered. Some organizations determine the net cost after taking into account student loans, which have to be repaid, and tax deductions and credits. Few organizations figure in additional costs, such as room, board, books and travel.
US News & World Report analyzed the scholarships and financial aid at the top 1,800 colleges and universities in the country and included those where students could very well pay less out of pocket than $20,000, the publication notes. That amount includes tuition, room, board, books and travel, according to the publication. In tough economic times when people are uncertain about the future, families particularly might have a hard time justifying assuming large debts for college, an August article in Forbes magazine notes.
Forbes, in its “Best Buy Colleges and Universities,” looked at school quality and average tuition sticker price and fees for 2008 to come up with a list where the top 10 included service academies, such as the Air Force and Coast Guard, that don’t charge tuition. The Forbes top 10 also included institutions with special aid programs that make them tuition free. A rare non-free institution on the Forbes top 10 was University of Florida, which came in at no. 9.
Scholarships are a common way for colleges, universities and technical schools to draw students. After finding quality institutions that might best fulfill their needs and goals, students are typically advised to figure in scholarships and other forms of financial aid and compare actual costs. To pay for college last year, families relied on more money from all sources, including scholarships and grants, according to a recent Fannie Mae report. Some lesser known institutions are actually offering scholarships to every student who is admitted, US News & World Report noted.
There are sources other than colleges and universities that provide scholarships, however. Non-profit organizations, large corporations and community and civic groups are among them, as are some churches. In instances where students obtain scholarships such as these, the assistance can often be applied to any institution that’s accredited by a nationally recognized agency. Students are often able to apply scholarships to online degree programs and courses in instances where this accreditation is in place as well.
Several new scholarships have also been helping students with college and university costs. In Arkansas, a new state lottery this year helped more than 25,000 students who qualified for Academic Challenge Scholarships, according to an August report from the Arkansas News Bureau. Last year, without the lottery, only 8,282 students qualified for these same scholarships, the News Bureau noted.
Scholarships might be awarded based on academic or athletic performance, financial need, demographics, subject area of study and other factors. While many scholarships are intended to encourage studies in subjects such as science, engineering and nursing that can lead to in-demand careers, there are also scholarships for sculptures, dancers, auto technologists and more. A number of search engines on the web can help students find the college grants that’s right for them. By combining scholarships, students might even be able to attend distance degree programs for free.
