Someone fortunate enough to be residing in Montana might view all the concern about air pollution as a mystery. However when you live downtown and you can practically touch the air, never mind see it, and to breathe deeply is usually a challenge, things are a little different. Most of the world is filled with air pollution, and even locations that don’t seem to have any, are getting it from the rest of the world.

Are you able to name all the things in the air that are damaging to people? Second-hand tobacco smoke, carbon monoxide, lead, sulfur dioxide, ozone, nitrates… and then there’s particulate matter. This is actually a catch-all phrase for something which has numerous origins, like road dust, the generation of power, emissions from vehicles in addition to many industrial emissions. And anything else that fouls the air, actually, such as volcanoes, pollen’s, forest fires, mold and much more. All of these particles come in various sizes, composition and origin, and one of the biggest components is automobile emissions. Roadways crowded with vehicles are the root cause of the deteriorating world-wide air pollution problem, and of course the biggest cities are the worst culprits.

Carbon monoxide gas is a major part of air pollution, but it’s not easy to detect, being without color or odor. Cigarette smoking and gasoline-powered vehicles are definitely the primary sources.
