The Tour De France Is Amongst The Biggest Sporting Spectacles In The World, And It Is To Be Hoped That The 2011 Tour Will Be As Good As Previous Events

One of the most demanding sporting competitions in the world is the Tour De France, the yearly cycling extravaganza which happens during a three week period in the summer, and during which the best road racers in the world participate in approximately twenty different stages of racing and cover a distance of near enough 2,000 miles. The event is an amazing feat of endurance and has been said to be similar to doing several marathons during a similar three week period.

The Tour has a fascinating history and was first held in 1903, having been organised by a newspaper editor as an attempt to force a rival publication out of business, by exclusively publishing coverage of this unusual event. Over the years of the event, the nature of the competition has evolved, with entrants including all-comers, regional and national teams and commercial teams of cyclists at different times. It has also tried holding one stage somewhere other than France in neighbouring European countries (including a stage in the UK in 2007). But two specifics are always consistent – most of the numerous stages take place on a fairly circuitous route through France, and always alternate between a clockwise race one year and a counter-clockwise one the following year. The end stage always finishes in Paris, in front of thousands of applauding and enthusiastic spectators, though the event doesn’t bother with the glitzy ‘closing ceremony’ with fireworks and Laser eye light displays like many other big sporting events.

There are usually roughly twenty teams taking part in the event, each with nine team members. Team-mates are permitted to help each other, and every team has its own back-up crew of mechanics and managers who follow along behind the cyclists in cars so that they can solve any issues which crop up along the route.

As anyone who has ever witnessed the race will be aware, the participants are preceded around the course by a massive number of sponsored vehicles which advertise their range of products and give away free gifts and advertising brochures to the many spectators. It is said that there are generally around 250 vehicles driving past the parade each year and each company will have paid a large amount of money in order to be able to publicise their brand at such an incredible event.

The very first business to pay for the privilege of preceding the Tour was a chocolate company – these days, it could be that almost any product would be acceptable – from cars to clothing, tooth whitening to Laser eye surgery, mobile phones to hotel chains, and inevitably food and drink (the healthy kinds anyway). As the Tour De France is the most watched annual sporting event in the world via the French TV footage, it isn’t surprising that organisations are keen to pay good money to be involved.

In each individual stage of the race, every rider will have his finishing time registered, and as the Tour continues, the recorded times for the stages are added up, giving an total score for each rider. Timing technology is now so advanced that each rider is tracked individually by a transponder attached to their bicycle which logs each time they pass one of the marker wires located on the course and maybe it is only a matter of time before Laser eye beams are used as opposed to physical wires. The rider with the quickest aggregate score is the Tour leader and will then wear the famous yellow jersey throughout the next stage. Prizes are also awarded for winning each stage, but this scoring process does mean that in reality a competitor could end up as the overall winner without needing to win an individual stage, as has occurred on several occasions. Simple consistency throughout the three weeks can provide a far superior overall time than the total time for a rider who could be fast on the flatter stages of the Tour, but find the mountainous stages more difficult, for example.

The other jersey which most casual viewers of the sport will have heard of is the King Of The Mountains. This is a white jersey with red dots which is given to the rider who has earned the most points for arriving at the top of specified mountains and hills ahead of all the other participants. As the route of the event could easily pass through the Alps or the Pyrenees, it isn’t surprising that a specific category would have been created to reward those cyclists who specialise in such steep and difficult climbs.

Another competition exists for those who finish in the first few places in the less mountainous stages and again points are allocated based on the rider’s final position when passing over the finish line. The leader of this competition will wear a green jersey for the next stage. By now it is quite obvious that the Tour De France does really include a few different ways for participants to gain points, praise and maybe most importantly, money.

The 2011 event will begin on 2nd July and it will be the 98th time that the event has taken place (the missing numbers being during two World Wars) and it is hoped that this year’s event will be equally as exciting as those we remember from years past. It is also to be hoped that there won’t be suggestion of the doping issues which have dominated the sport of cycling in recent times. There are some legal ways of enhancing performance, like the golfers who undergo Laser eye surgery to improve the standard of their vision, but taking illegal drugs is wrong in all sport.
