If You Buy Tray Cable Learn Why Copper Price Matters So Much
Many Businesses who have followed the markets lately will notice that commodity costs have been on an upward trajectory through the first part of this year. As vntc cable as well as tray cable, sow cable, soow cable, and dlo cable are all very much dependent on raw material costs, there has been quite a large increase in the cost associated with these items.
Many of our regular customers are understandably aware of the effects of increasing raw material costs. What has the biggest effect of course is the price of copper. Copper as of today was selling for about $4.30 per pound on the COMEX. At this price point it is hovering near its all time closing high of around $4.60 per pound hit earlier this year at the start of 2011. One wonders how much higher can it go.
A close second to copper in power cable manufacturing is the price of oil. As the outer sheathing and conductor insulation of most cables are oil based, the price of oil plays a significant part in pricing also. Oil we know hit a high of about $147 per barrel just 2 1/2 short years ago and right now is on the rise again with all of the tensions in the Middle East and North Africa. Oil right now sells for about $104 per barrel.
If the economy keeps improving, it is quite likely that we will witness a sustained increase in these raw input prices. Most economists agree that we are in the midst of a slow but steady recovery that will go on for the rest of 2011 and into next year.
Quite a few emerging markets are also experiencing improvements with China of course being the biggest in terms of increased GDP. If we can continue with this current trajectory it is reasonable to believe that copper and oil will continue to increase in cost. If you are a big buyer of the largest types of wire and cable it may behoove you to take a look at some projections for the rest of this year and possibly consider stocking up now before we start to see the big price increases.
So how can you use this knowledge to your advantage? When you see costs go down on the NYMEX, ensure that your supplier is lowering the prices of their finished items to you. Often, distributors are quicker to increase prices than to reduce them. Armed with the knowledge of raw goods costs, make sure that your supplier is pricing their wire and cable appropriately.
If you feel there is a disparity between the cost of the raw materials and your finished goods price, consider reaching out to another distributor for another bid. There are many players who sell tray cable and vntc cable. This extra effort on your part could help you retain more profit for yourself. Plus, knowledge of cost reductions can allow you to lower your bid prices, which might in turn make your bid more competitive than your peers – and allow you to win more business.
