The Politics of Slave Trade Suppression in Britain and France, 1814-48

The Politics of Slave Trade Suppression in Britain and France, 1814-48

$132

Britain’s rarely-examined, nineteenth-century diplomatic efforts for abolition took contemporary pre-eminence over most questions and almost sparked war with France in 1845. Kielstra examines the issue in Anglo-French relations: how conflicting moral, economic, and nationalist pressures and lobby groups affected domestic politics and high diplomacy. To preserve peace and their positions, statesmen had little margin for error as they framed policies which attacked the trade and satisfied mutually incompatible domestic opinions, in a struggle which holds lessons for current efforts to include human rights concerns in foreign policy.

Free Trade Nation: Commerce, Consumption, and Civil Society in Modern Britain

Free Trade Nation: Commerce, Consumption, and Civil Society in Modern Britain

$36.42

One of Britain’s defining contributions to the modern world, Free Trade united civil society and commerce and gave birth to consumer power. In this book, Frank Trentmann shows how the doctrine of Free Trade contributed to the growth of a democratic culture in Britain–and how it fell apart. Far from the cold economic doctrine of today, in an earlier battle over globalization Free Trade was a passionately held ideal, central to public life and national identity. Free Trade inspired popular entertainment and advertising, in seaside resorts, shows, and shopping streets. It mobilized an alliance of elites and the people, businessmen and working-class women, imperialists and internationalists. Free Trade Nation follows the creation of this culture in nineteenth-century Britain, and its subsequent unraveling in the First World War and the depression of the 1930s, when consumers and internationalists, labor and business now attacked it for sacrificing international stability and domestic welfare at the temple of cheapness. These successful attacks marked the end of a defining chapter in history. The popular culture of Free Trade was never to return. For anyone interested in the current problem of globalization, this book offers a vivid and thought-provoking perspective on the success and failure of Free Trade. For champions of trade liberalization, it is a reminder that culture, ethics and popular communication matter just as much as sound economics. Believers in Fair Trade, by contrast, will be surprised to learn that in the past it was Free Trade, not Fair Trade, that was seen to stand for values such as democracy, justice, and peace.

Explore What’s On Offer For Tourist Accommodation In UK

Are you coming to the Britain this year? Do you know where to stay? Britain has a wide range of accommodation and you will unearth an inordinate choice of places to stay.

Sorts of Hotel

There are a plethora of hotels, incorporating multi-national companies like the Hilton and Mercure, and a variety of individual hotels across the country. Some of these are expensive and some are less so. Expect to pay from about £30 per night per person (cheap prices) to £600 or more per night, according to the level of luxury you want. Prices change depending on which days you are staying (some give lower prices at the end of the week for example) or where you are in the Britain (urban centres are more expensive than the smaller villages and London and other capitals are the most costly places to holiday).

Serviced Apartments

A new phenomenon in the past fifteen years has been the introduction of serviced apartment accommodation. Serviced apartments, like serviced apartments Manchester, are nearly always situated in towns and cities. They normally supply not simply a room with a private bath and shower room like a hotel, but also include a good quality kitchen with utensils and up to three bedrooms. There are studios (only a single room) for a maximum of two. Serviced apartments are usually bigger than hotels and allow you the flexibility to cook in your room, eat there or get out to the local restaurants round about. There is often a maid service and an on-site manager who is able to arrange other services you may want while you stay. Serviced apartments are for corporate customers and leisure customers. They are just right for small groups and families since friends and kids can have a separate bedroom off the living area, in contrast with hotels where they may only get a bedroom down a public corridor.

Bed and Breakfast Accommodation

Exclusive to Britain is the concept of a B&B. Most commonly situated in a person’s home, they are available in all shapes and sizes, some at premium rates and exclusive, like Wolsey Lodges and others that are more basic. The concept is that you pay for your room and are dished up a choice of breakfast and are then expected to leave for the day by 10 in the morning and do not come back until about 5 in the evening. Several bed and breakfasts serve dinner, although this cannot be guaranteed. If you are having a short break in a town or expect to explore a town or area thoroughly without the need for a permanent base to come back to in the daytime, this can be a suitable option.

Accommodation For Smaller Pockets

For people counting the pennies, there are budget Bed and Breakfasts, hotels with special offers and youth hostels. Youth hostels are situated everywhere throughout Great Britain. They now provide self service buffet breakfasts which can include cooked English breakfast, sandwiches for lunchtime and evening meals that sustain you well until the next day’s walking, as well as supplying a communal kitchen where you can cook at the same time as other people staying. Located in some of GB’s most beautiful rural areas, Youth Hostels are a wonderful way to encounter a wide range of people and to encounter more of the GB than the average overseas visitor. All ages of people can use a Youth Hostel and there are family rooms with private bathrooms in several hostels. Shared single sex rooms are also available. Although immaculately clean and warm, youth hostels are not luxurious! The point of a youth hostel is to get out into the countryside or town and to meet people; so no TVs, generally, but lots of games for children and adults, walking maps and tourist information and tremendous walks guaranteed.

Whichever accommodation type you choose, there is accommodation available for everyone. Enjoy your stay.
